whatever

i have no joke typed out this fucking intro no less than 4 times, detailing that i've been late releasing it bc i've been trying to plan my wedding, wean off anti-depressants (again), and get my life back on track. and each time this newsletter plug-in has eaten total shit and wiped all my progress. i can't do it again. let's just GET ON WITH IT.

shameless self promotion

a very quick rundown on things i've been working on recently:

IT STINKS!

tumblr has introduced a new tool called "communities". it's still very much in the testing phase (which is why i have to manually add new members instead of people simply being able to sign up), but i thought i would try it out by building a community around watching and reviewing bad movies, weird movies, or cult classics. introducing "IT STINKS!".

if you want to join IT STINKS! you have to tell me from your main account (sideblogs can't be added). it's not an ideal system, but its what we have for now.

in order to celebrate the creation of this group, i am hosting a stream of "HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS" (2024) (a good movie) tonight at 8PM EST. the link will be posted in the group closer to showtime. you don't have to be a member to show up, but it helps.

IT STINKS! roundup

from fltwoodsmonster comes reviews of rare gems from v-cinema/japanese SFX horror: biotherapy, star virgin, the boxer's omen, and the flying luna clipper! for something a little different, they also recommended the cyberpunk feminist (?) tour de force eve of destruction.

superkamicassidy recommends robogeisha for reveling in its stupid premise and having as much fun as it possibly can with it. the stupid image of her as a tank has me in stitches so i gotta check this one out. mario kart lookin ass

laughicate offered up "the peanut butter solution", which i did not remember watching as a child until i read the post. and i have to wonder "what the fuck was up with that. why did they make that".

verifiedaccount posted a pretty interesting look at warhol's adaptation of "a clockwork orange" called "vinyl" and how it functions less as an actual adaptation and more of a historical document peeking into warhol's factory and the people who frequented it. they also posted about a personal favorite of mine, norman mailer's tough guys don't dance. a movie that seemingly fails on nearly every possible level.

my delightful friend mothbeam posted the tokusatsu classic mechanical violator hakaider. toku movies really are perfect submissions for this place because they are all unbelievably goofy as a core concept, but must take themselves deathly seriously in order to "sell" the scenes. they also tend to feature some of the best practical effects humanly possible. absolutely worth a watch.

and last, i sent out a review of wild mountain thyme, which isn't worth anyone's (wild mountain) time. but the experience permanently burned itself into my brain and i at least needed to inform people that the irish are just out here making evil movies for no reason.

odds and ends
  • my friend radatav has been juggling several incredible multimedia projects. you might know them from tumblr as littleguysdaily but they also have been working on andy jam, a webcomic/webseries/video game about a boring little guy named andy who is surrounded by lunatics.
  • this video about the 1998 video game BAROQUE (weird! cool! REALLY ahead of its time!) lead me to this really delightful retro feeling fan shrine that evokes the experience of trying to look up info about an obscure game in the late 90s.
  • anyaustin chases down the rivers of skyrim, something i thought only i did to be annoying and pedantic. i'm not alone....
  • some chef john recipes adam and i have been eating: tortillas de patatas (good but needs something to soak up the grease in your stomach), korean spicy noodle bake (good but weird in terms of texture? the noodles might have been a little TOO crunchy for me), charred red cabbage salad (exquisite).
  • internet shaquille, a chef who mostly does mexican recipes, posted about his miserable experience doing only shorts for a month.
  • manga i read that i think everyone would enjoy but can't link due to the lightly illegal nature of scans:
    • helck (a story that begins as a gag manga about the strongest human fighting to become the new demon king because he "doesn't like humans", becomes an epic fantasy adventure that never forgets its gag manga roots)
    • haraiso days (a very lighthearted manga about an izakaya in a cyberpunk post-apocalyptic world. the stakes are never higher than the interpersonal drama between the patrons)
    • souboutei must be destroyed (a manga that has the frenetic energy of a manga made 20 years ago. a little fanservice-y, but ultimately a real gripping tale of ghosts, aliens, and time travel that begins with the prime minister of japan trying and failing to blow up a haunted house with missiles)
    • no home (a manhua about troubled boys trying to do their best in high school. one of them can see ghosts but, hysterically, this was pushed aside to explore more mundane drama. i completely understand).

that's all for now. keep it sleazy!
